Jun 15, 2023 (AB Digital via COMTEX) -- To renovate the historic Tomlinson building, which has been standing in the Mirror Lake neighborhood of St. Petersburg for 99 years, Pinellas County Schools has chosen Tomlinson Community Partners (TCP). This strategic alliance responds to the demand for affordable worker housing for school personnel and instructors.

The Tampa Bay Times spotlighted a major step forward for attainable housing in St. Petersburg with its coverage of the Tomlinson workforce housing project, a proposed apartment development designed specifically to serve Pinellas County Schools employees. The article, titled “Developer selected to turn St. Petersburg building into teacher apartments,” highlights the selection of a developer to transform the historic Tomlinson site into a residential community that would help address one of the region’s most urgent challenges: housing affordability for teachers and school district staff. According to the Tampa Bay Times, the project was planned to include 225 apartments on the former school district property, with rents for eligible employees ranging from $1,263 to $2,160. The project reflects the growing importance of public-private partnerships in solving Florida’s workforce housing shortage, especially in high-demand urban areas like St. Petersburg where educators and essential workers often struggle to live near the communities they serve. For Alexander Goshen and Miles Alexander III, the Tomlinson project represents the type of mission-driven development that combines adaptive reuse, community need, and long-term public benefit. By reimagining an underutilized school district property as attainable housing, the project offers a replicable model for other school districts, municipalities, and development partners seeking creative ways to support Florida’s workforce.
